April 25, Saturday, 9:00AM-4PM Loyola University Chicago, “Earth Day 2009” celebration.  http://www.luc.edu/earthday  Loyola http://www.luc.edu/info/maps/lsc.pdf, This event is co-sponsored by leading groups in the Rogers Park, Edgewater, Andersonville, Uptown, Ravenswood, and West Ridge Communities. Complimentary parking at the Parking Structure on Loyola’s campus. CTA red line. Taking care of the Earth is a collaborative effort.  In that spirit, the north side communities of Andersonville, Edgewater, Ravenswood, Rogers Park, Uptown, and West Ridge have joined forces with Loyola University Chicago to host the second North Lake Shore Earth Day Celebration  Workshops and panels will explore caring for the environment—globally and locally—to empower Chicagoans to take action in making the world greener.

April 4, 2008, 9AM - Lincoln Park, Sat., Chicago The Run for the Cheetah - $28 register online by Apr. 2, $35 registration day of event.  The run along the Lakefront is a fun event designed to raise awareness about the endangered cheetah and to raise funds to support the Cheetah Conservation Fund's programs. Anatolian Guard dogs used to help save farmers to save the Cheetah in Namibia will be there. Help support conservation of the Cheetah.  Earthwatch Principal Investigator Laurie Marker for the Cheetah expedition in Namibia, is the Founder and Executive Director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). Read more about Dr. Marker's research in the February 2008 issue of Smithsonian Magazine.  This is a CCF event.  See the web site The Run for the Cheetah for updates, questions and to register.

March 28 11:30 - 1:30 Sat, Open House hosted by Garfield Farm Museum, IL Campton Hills hosted. Potluck lunch and open house - $5 suggested donation at door. Earthwatch sponsors volunteers and investigators on many ecological and other scientific expeditions each year. Garfield Farm and Tavern Museum preserves Illinois history and open space including natural and restored prairie. Come and bring your friends to a Potluck Lunch and Volunteer sharing at the Farm. Please bring a dish to pass. Water, soft drinks, and utensils will be provided. Please bring pictures of your Earthwatch experiences if you have been on an expedition.

Optional Activities:  8:30 am – 11:30 pm – Be a Firewatcher on a Prairie Burn (Weather Permitting) 
                                     1:30 pm - 4:30 pm – tours of the 1846 tavern, the 1840s barns and animals, and/or the prairie

Feb 22, Sun., noon - Wheaton – Cantigny Golf Course Red Oak Room, $16 for advance paid reservations, $20 for reservations after Feb 17 or at the door – Whether a ‘veteran’ of multiple Earthwatch projects or yet to participate in your first, join Chicago-area Earthwatch volunteers as they recount and share photos from their recent expeditions at research sites around the world. This annual brunch poster session is not to be missed! You’ll hear first hand about the exciting research projects that you can participate in with Earthwatch, and learn about the pressing environmental issues that Earthwatch’s research projects are addressing in dozens of countries: Saving the Tarangire Migration Tanzania, Costa Rica Sea Turtles, Puerto Rico’s Rainforest (Family Team), Meerkats of the Kalahari,  South Africa's Brown Hyenas , New York City Wildlife, Songbirds of the Tetons, Archeology Potpourri  - subject to change.

Program: Angie Adkin, recipient of the Feay Earthwatch scholarship will share her experience in the Tarangire. She spent 10 days observing zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes in the most beautiful bush.  Each morning she would wake before sunrise, eat a delicious breakfast, and hit the road in search of the animals in order to take photographs and behavioral observations.  The research area extended outside the Tarangire National Park, so she was able to see a lot of historical ungulate migratory routes. Come and learn about her experience and how you could take a similar volunteer vacation with Earthwatch. The objective of this project is to develop strategies to conserve large mammal migrations throughout East Africa.  Angie will also present her pictures and adventure at the Poster Session on Feb. 22.

The Adventures in Travel Expo, will be at the Donald E. Stephens (formerly Rosemont) Convention Center off River Road near O’Hare. The Convention Center is about a 2 block walk along River Road from the Rosemont Stop on the CTA blue line to O’Hare. Several CTA bus routes also stop there. Public parking is available at the blue line Rosemont stop for $3, convention center parking for $11.

March 8, 2008 Saturday 1PM –- Field Museum, free with Museum admission (pre-registration not required)  Dr. Summer Arrigo-Nelson, Co-Principal Investigator, Madagascar Lemurs, will speak on Rainforest Lemur Conservation - The Impact of Habitat Disturbance

The island of Madagascar is among the planet's top biodiversity hotspots, with tropical forests full of animals found nowhere else in the world. This biological treasure trove is threatened with large-scale destruction by logging and other human activities. Summer Arrigo-Nelson will show us what she is learning about the impact of habitat destruction on the sifaka lemur, a long-legged leaper and arboreal acrobat.  See some of the results of the efforts that Earthwatch supports.  You can join Summer on one of her Earthwatch teams to Madagascar and help make a difference.  Join us and learn more.  This is a Field Museum event.

Earthwatch will have booth 1834 at the Adventures in Travel Expo, This year the show will be open to the public on Saturday, January 26, from 10:30am to 5:30pm, and on Sunday, January 27, from 11am to 4:30pm. Tickets $15 at the show, $10 purchased online.

Sunday at 12:45PM the founder of Earthwatch, Brian Rosborough is featured on the National Geographic ADVENTURE Theatre Stage, Earthwatch: Travel with a Mission, Adventure is the Reward. This is a unique opportunity to meet hear about Earthwatch from its beginnings in 1972.  Brian will be at the Earthwatch booth after his talk on Sunday so you can visit and ask more questions. Stop by the Earthwatch Booth to learn more about us and talk to people who have been on recent expeditions.

The Convention Center is about a 2 block walk along River Road from the Rosemont Stop on the CTA blue line to O’Hare. Several CTA bus routes also stop there. Public parking is available at the blue line Rosemont stop for $3. The convention center parking is $11.

Nov. 13, Tuesday 7:30PM Brookfield Zoo -  Rolf Peterson PI for Moose and Wolves.  SORRY SOLD OUT. Brookfield Zoo's Discovery Center, information Mary Feay mfeay@att.net The Wolves of Isle Royale. Peterson will discuss the predator-prey relationship between wolves and moose in this island national park, emphasizing findings that have emerged especially because of the long-term (50-year) nature of the research. Results of this research have helped turn around public attitudes toward wolves and revolutionize wildlife-management and wolf-reintroduction policies worldwide.
